How can I keep my puppy from barking at night?
Posted on Dec 26, 2008 under puppy barking |We have a beagle/lab mix that we've had for almost 3 weeks now. She is about 7 lbs and 11 weeks old. We got her from a rescue shelter where she was rescued with her litter mates. We don't know much more about her history. We live in a two-bedroom apartment and we keep her in her kennel at night, in the second vacant bedroom. When we got her, the rescue shelter told us not to put any sort of bed or anything in the kennel with her at night because it gives them an absorbent area to go to the bathroom on. She has been barking all through the night every night. We can't sleep and I'm scared I'm keeping the other people in our building up at night too. We put a washcloth in with her to give her a little something soft to lay on, and that helps a little, but she still wines/barks every night and it's been almost three weeks now. We've even tried the ticking clock next to the kennel. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
If you spoil your dog like me, to get it to stop barking all you have to do is put the dog on your bed and rub behind its ear. They will become relaxed and will either go to sleep or just stop barking.

get a wind-up clock that 'ticks' and put it in the dog house with her. She is lonely and scared; and insecure. The ticking will provide her with the impression she is not alone- she will associate it with the heartbeat of another animal.

Thank you for adopting a pet… First of all.
But you know what.. You will have to come to some kind of agreement with your new family member…
Scaring her is not good, yelling is not good. Maybe a favorite toy, or where a shirt (old one for a while) and then place it in cage with her for her to lay on. A blanket or towel with the person she loves the mostest smell… Maybe a radio in the room on a low station (dental music). Maybe a night light???
Have you tried any of these things? Our dog still uses kennel at night in our bedroom and its her place. Not a place for punishment, she likes her room… her bed, her stuff. She hides all her stuff in there.
Good Luck!!

She will soon stop barking when she becomes familiar with her surroundings, dogs are jus like humans in in new territory especially when they are young take a while to warm up to their environment, it will soon end.

Ok, I just scanned through what you wrote.. but what should be done is move the dog into your room its the only way to keep her quiet.. She is probably just very lonely in the room by herself. After you start her in your room you move her slowly to the other room and farther away from you.. just keep in mind that the dog has been moved 2 times now so it will take her a while to get used to a new place.. and think about sleeping at a new place.. you always don't sleep right

Well you can go back to the shelter and ask for a blanket of her littermates smell, that always helps because it will feel like it is back with them. Also you can get a warm waterbottel and tuck it in a towel or soft blanket to make it feel like it is next to its mother or littermates. If she is still doing it she could either need food/water or have to go to the bathroom. Hope this helped!

I don't know if it works on all dogs, but we got a leader for our dog. It's called a Gentle Leader Head collar. It's made to keep dogs from pulling so hard when you take them for a walk, but if my dog starts to bark, I just slip the leader on her, and she settles down and stops barking. It's absolutely not a muzzle, and it has an adjustable nose loop so that it will fit well. It's been a while since we got it, but I think you can get it at any pet store.

I've never had this problem. I have two pups and they always kept eachother company. But obviously the pup is lonley and scared and insecure. I'd possible keep the crate in your room maybe?? See how that goes. I would take a blanket and kinda make a bed for him to snuggle up into!! I realy don't think that they will urinate, Mine never did!!! GOOD LUCK!

Bring her kennel into your room for now. She is scared of being alone. Then when she starts to bark you can tell her not to. If she continues anyway, try a squirt bottle with water and give her a little squirt in the face when you say no. She also needs some bedding. Give her an old towel at the back of her kennel. Instincts will tell her to keep it dry.

Hi, I am sorry to hear your new family member is not comfortable at night. but trust me it will get better.
To help them realize it's bed time, what we did is we went to the resale shop and bought a blanket big enough to cover their kennel. This helps them realize when its dark they should sleep and when it's light they can be up. You cover the kennel when you go to bed at night and open it up when you get up to let her out.
Bringing them into your room, may help too. But I really do think you should try putting a blanket over the kennel. They will feel secure and also help realize that it's time for bed.
I have three dogs and have done this with all three. Infact Mack still is crate trained and gets a blanket.
P.S. regardless of what the shelter told you, I would advice putting a small blanket int heir for her to lay on. Generally they don't pee where they sleep. After all would you like to sleep without a mattress??
Good luck.

Have you tired makeing her a bed in your room on the floor? I'd keep a puppy pad in there so she can use the bathroom also. My lab used to do that, but I got an old comforter and made her a bed on the floor next to ours and she loved it. There puppies, just like babies, they just want to be close to you! Oh and if you don't want to keep her out of the kennel, try making a big comfy bed in the kennel and keeping her in your room and when she barks or whines, tell her no in a firm voice. It should stop within a couple of days. Good luck!

My puppy used to bark at night, then we got another dog to keep it company and it's stopped barking. So maybe it's lonely? If you want, keep her kennel in your bedroom.
But if it's only about having a bed and if you are really needing your sleep, then just put a small blanket in with her and wash it every day.
