Tips for house training a 5 month old puppy?
Posted on Dec 26, 2008 under puppy tips |We've just rescued to puppy from the SPCA and he occasionally has some mishaps on our carpet. Have been showing him to the offending spot and stirnly saying 'no' then immediately leading him to the lawn in our garden so he gets the message. Is there any other tips you can share please? Thanks.
I had this problem and it takes about a week or two to get it into their fluffy heads. Keep doing what you are doing and it will pay off, but make sure you catch them in the act and don't shout at them when you see a recent wet patch on the floor as they won't know what you are on about.
A good tip that works for me is to give 'weeing' a name. So when he/she is in the garden urinating you say 'wee-wee's' or something like that as he she is doing it. It is good because if i am leaving the dog behind when i go out i can take her in the garden an say wee-wee's and she will go. Then i know it won't be a problem when i leave.
Also, prepare for your house hold to be chewed in the next couple of months.

Dont bother saying no unless you caught him right in the act, puppies have really small attention spans. Try wee-pads that attract the puppy to use them, praise him when he uses it, then slowly move the pad closer to the door, then finally start to take him outside, make sure you give lots of praise.

Put a few sheats of newspaper down on the floor, so he/she can use that. and if she poo's on the floor pick it up and put it on the sheets of newspaper so she/he knows to use that to go to the toilet. Thats how we housetrained our litter of dogs hope it helps and good luck x

That's not really the right way to do it unless you caught him peeing on the floor and disiplined him there and then. Regular walks are the best way to do it, whenever he pee's outside make a lot of fuss over him & soon he'll get the message. Also keep an eye on his behaviour, a dog will normally let you know when he needs to go once you begin to notice this let him outside so he can pee. Rescue dogs can come with little problems like that but as long as you praise the good behaviours & ignore any unwanted behaviours the will soon get the message.

all i did with my dog is letting her inside the house regually so that she knows that it is her area and when she figures that out she will hopefully stop
try these:
#leaving the flyscreen/ doggie door ajar so that she sees a way out
# taking her outside about every 15-30 min and after she has a drink of water, wakes up or eats

Treat him as you would an 8 week old pup. Take him outside regularly - after he's woken up, after he's eaten & when he's been playing. Take him out, don't just put him out & when he does perform in the right place, praise him to the skies. Don't react at all when he does it indoors, just put him out of the room & clear it up thoroughly, making sure you get rid of every trace of smell or he'll keep going back to that spot. A biological cleaner is better than bleach (which you wouldn't use on a carpet anyway!)
Don't bother with newspapers or puppy pads - they are just training him that it's OK to go indoors & then you have to re-train him that it's not.
Good Luck

Never hit the dog no matter what he does it will just make it worst. Put some newspaper down or some puppy pads which you can get from any good supermarket. By it a little pen so its got something that he can call his own. (lol). Take him to a puppy socialising class so he can get used to other dogs and most importantly spend time with him the first couple of months are the most important time to bond with him. And take him for frequent walks so it makes him sleep but make sure there no that there not to long otherwise it will weaken his joints for when he's older. Hope this helps!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes. I would crate train your puppy. He should be in his crate whenever you cannot watch him closely. When you let him out of the crate he must IMMEDIATELY go outside. You should also take him outside the moment he's finished a meal. When he does his business outside, praise, praise, praise! Then go back inside. I agree with a previous answer that you do not want to correct him unless you catch him in the process of eliminating in the house.
I have successfully crate trained a number of puppies at different ages. Dogs are den animals, and like having a clean, safe & cozy place to sleep. Be sure to keep the crate time short enough to allow your puppy to be successful.
Good luck, and enjoy your puppy!

the best thing i found with all my dogs is to crate train them, some people find this cruel but once the dog gets used to it he will regard the crate as his home, my dogs have been sucessfully housetrained within 3 weeks usig this method as dogs will not mess in their own home. It takes time but it always work and its also very good when you want to go out that stops chewing when in the chewing stage. training takes a couple of weeks to get used to the crate its done gradually by feeding in there-door open for a few days, them straight out for the toilet, then the door shut and again taken out, then try without food-door shut go into another room for a few minutes let out lots of praise and make it longer and longer to be left, i found that an old worn item of clothing makes them feel as though you are near.
